How to Celebrate Your Friendships

there are multiple levels of closeness, especially when it comes to friends. in my world, the deepest and closet friendship i have is referred to as a soulfriend. oh, what’s a soulfriend you might ask? this is someone who is like a soulmate, except you are not married to this person but your souls have connected in a way that you cannot live without one another. it is like extreme best friends and in my experience, when you meet a soulfriend it is a rare and an instant, deep connection.

today i am celebrating my 9th soulfriend anniversary with lindsey! she has appeared on the blog previously when i visited her in new york city to eat scones and day drink (fun fact, she was the manager of alice’s teacup in NYC so she worked with the location director from trainwreck to set up filming there! too cool).

Ways to celebrate your friendship

this time last year, we played in seattle together and i sort of freaked out seeing her pregnant and couldn’t keep my hands off her belly.

now that she lives in colorado again, it’s a double bonus when i go home to see my parents and get to see her too! i was so very happy we got to spend a little bit of time together when i was back a few weeks ago for my high school reunion! she is such a good planner that she not only presented me with an anniversary card but also a gift for our soulfriend anniversary!

lindsey also presented her baby caleb for me and ravery to love on. i’m sure some part of me is bias in how adorable he is but from a pretty objective viewpoint, he is the most handsome and extremely happy baby!

we decided to start celebrating our friendship a few years ago because who doesn’t love to celebrate happy things?! why and how to celebrate your friendships? i have got you covered.

just like a romantic relationship, friendships also take time and energy so i am a strong believer in celebrating that relationship too. this is why i believe we should all be celebrating our close friendships because if you are lucky enough to have some solid people in your life by choice, they deserve to be celebrated.

how did we come up with our friendship anniversary date? we picked a date we both liked. very scientific. we both love the month of september because my anniversary is at the beginning of the month and her birthday is at the end. plus, we both love autumn and pumpkin spice everything so it was only fitting.

like we can sometimes do with our spouse, once you get to a certain level of comfort with your friend, it’s easier to take her for granted. express how much her friendship means to you and the characteristics in her you especially love.

here are 5 ways to celebrate your friendship if you live in the same city:

  1. share a celebratory meal together (brunch is my personal favorite)
  2. spend an afternoon together walking through a park or shopping, wearing friendship bracelets
  3. go to the bowling alley or do some other fun activity together
  4. movie day! get your favorite snacks, favorite movies and hunker down!
  5. drop off flowers at her work

here are 5 ways to celebrate your friendship if you (sadly) do not live near each other:

  1. buy matching mugs and sip hot cocoa together via facetime! (here are the super cute mugs we have). repeat with wine when it’s appropriate.
  2. send a thoughtful card expressing what you love about her and your gratitude
  3. take a trip together!
  4. buy some of her favorite candies/snacks and mail them to her
  5. leave a heart-felt message on her voicemail telling her how much you love and appreciate her to the point where your husband says ‘wow, that was a really long message.’

do you celebrate any of your friendships? other ideas on ways to celebrate?

I just LOVE this idea! I have 3 soul friends, I’m not 100% certain of the dates we became friends but we became friends when I moved into the neighbourhood when I was a toddler. I have a feeling they are going to love this idea too! Thanks for this!

This is such a great idea. I’ve never thought about a friendship-versary, but I love it! (I actually blogged about my soulfriend/bestfriend today, too!) I know we became friends in the summer of 2009 so we would’ve celebrated 6 years this year. We will definitely have to plan something for year 7!
