Things To Do Near Adelaide, Australia
Things To Do Near Adelaide, Australia
while on our travels down under, we spent a few days in adelaide, australia and it was so fun! adelaide is part of southern australia and known as the city of festivals.
should you be in this part of the world, here are 7 things to do near adelaide, australia!
1) visit glenelg beach
we opted to stay on the beach in glenelg and it was lovely (chilly but beautiful)! glenelg is about 20 minutes from the heart of the city of adelaide and definitely more laid back but with plenty of cute cafes and shops. saying the actual word ‘glenelg’ isn’t my favorite but it sure is pretty.
stroll up and down jetty road for eccentric cafes and fun places to eat!
2) grab dinner at the central market (friday nights)
we fell in love with the central market! it’s open late friday nights (closed sundays and mondays). you will see hipsters, families and people of all ages doing their produce shopping here as well as grabbing lots of tasty food.
we were told by the locals to go friday night and it was bustling! it’s indoors and filled with great people watching.
here you will also find donuts the size of your face. this one in particular was dense like a bagel but that’s not necessarily a bad thing (but it is a filling thing).
3) grab a drink at 2K.W.
this is a trendy and ‘very hip’ spot in adelaide with a gorgeous view of the city set atop an old historic building! you have to take two elevators to get there! they do have a dress code (like don’t wear yoga pants or ripped clothes) and it can sometimes be hard to get in but the views are worth it!
4) visit kangaroo island
we didn’t have enough time to personally venture here but everyone was recommending it to us! it does take a bit to get there from adelaide but seems totally worth it if you have a few days to spend on kangaroo island! here you can see koalas in the trees and get a serious nature fix!
5) wine tasting in the adelaide hills
this is about a 45 minute drive from adelaide and well worth it! you could also hire a driver or take a tour so you can #drinkallthewine. since it’s a cooler climate in the hills, it makes for delicious wine!
we started out with a local favorite, shaw + smith and it did not disappoint! look at that view.
next we ventured to ‘the line’ vineyard and that’s where ravery discovered his love for kingfish. wineries in australia do it right by offering unique and delicious food pairings with their wine tasting!
we didn’t have enough time but barossa valley and mclaren vale are other areas (in the opposite direction of adelaide hills) that also boast amazing vineyards!
we ended with hahndorf hills winery. this winery is near the cute german town of hahndorf (see more in #6).
i mean, chocolate and wine…what’s not to completely love?! they also have an option to do chocolate-only tastings. there are also specific pairings if you like specific types of chocolate (milk/white/dark).
6) stroll through the quaint german town of hahndorf
hahndorf is australia’s oldest surviving german settlement! it’s leafy (we were there in may – autumn time for australia) and it was gorgeous!
there are plenty of places to eat, drink and find interesting german-themed art and souvenirs.
our friends heather and nick, who live in adelaide, were nice enough to drive us the 45 minutes out to hahndorf and show us this cute town!
obviously, THIS had to happen:
they had so many cute and quirky things in all the little shops!
if you get the chance, stop by the cheese shop “udder delights” and obviously get some cheese but also get their sticky date pudding! daaaaamn:
7) go to a festival
adelaide is known as the festival city because they truly have an outrageous number of festivals throughout the year! we didn’t have enough time to go to one but check out what’s on when you’re there!
as you can see, there is plenty to do and see near adelaide, australia! we loved our time (and wine) here!
have you been to adelaide before? what else would you recommend?
