Happy Halloween! Reminiscing about Past Ridiculous Halloweens!

By  |  8 Comments

happy halloween!!! i LOVE halloween (could be because free candy is flowing freely everywhere i turn) and also fall time in general. this is the first year i haven’t been able to decorate or go to halloween parties with friends so instead i will relive all the fun times we’ve had in the past!

here’s a smattering:

i usually get some sort of of holiday craft that drives my husband insane because he hates clutter and trinket stuff. lucky for him…i get time-limited things. marriage is all about compromise, people.

halloween crafts

halloween 2008: i was hermione from harry potter (DUH) and ravery went as “chelsea’s type of guy” (it’s true…i thought i would end up with a guy that was covered in tattoos and piercing and instead i married mr. preppy. my mother is thrilled). this party was hosted by great friends of mine and it was ALL harry potter themed. favorite ever.

ryan avery and chelsea avery on halloweenfall 2010:

this was right after we got back from our honeymoon in Egypt so we are still nicely tanned (and i am using up the contacts i got for snorkeling purposes) this was at Kruger’s Farm in Oregon. my husband is wearing my absolute favorite shirt he owns…i dubbed it the “pumpkin spice shirt.” it’s so fall-y and hipster and i love him in it.

oh, and the 12 year old forgot to tell us how awkward we looked sitting on the pumpkins. check out that leg. and hand positioning.

halloween 2012:

we decided to go to a party very last minute so off to the thrift store we went earlier that day. terrible picture BUT ravery found an old sheet and transformed into a mummy and i became a lady overly excited for christmas. my dress was covered in presents, gingerbread men, and candy canes. my christmas mug (of course) contained wine.

my response for when people asked what i was supposed to be, i gave them a confused look and said “what do you mean? i’m just excited for christmas!!!” then offered them christmas cookies. BOOM. top that.

chelsea and ryan avery halloween 2012

today i am wearing orange and and any free bowl of candy i run across, i’m taking some. the husband and i are headed to Napa Valley to enjoy some magnificent wine and put this Halloween into it’s own unique category. stay tuned for Β winery recaps and a fun news (well fun for me and if you come over to hang out with me)!

ps. please don’t wear a racist costume. if you aren’t sure if you costume is racist…here’s a handy flowchart for you. or read from the amazing writings from ‘native appropriations‘ there are 390284203 things to be-racist isn’t one of them.

the new wifestyle: you may not always be able to celebrate holidays in the same way you are used to, but you do have power to still make it a great one!

questions:
1) halloween costume you are most proud of?
2) what are you plans for celebrating today?
3) favorite halloween candy you are after?

    1. the costume I am most proud of is the one I MADE for my daughter this year….PRINCESS LEIA!!!! it is AWESOME. I’ll post pics later.
    2. today I am supposed to MC my Toastmasters Scary Storytelling Event but I have been sick for about 10 days now and I have nothing left. I will be staying home while my daughter trick or treats with her dad (for the first time ever and she is very excited about that so that’s pretty cool) I will stay home and watch tv and drink hot chocolate.
    3. I like those little candies that look and taste like baby aspirin. Can’t seem to find them anywhere else all year.

    hey chelsea,

i’m quite curious as what constitutes a racist photo, so i read through both your flowchart (nice!) and the article. i agree. but i’m not sure of whether i’m unintentionally guilty of this or not. is a hillbilly costume racist? i’ll send you a copy of the pic on fb..

    to answer your questions:

    1) i went as a pharaoh, that was awesome
    2) i’m going to stay home and be lamesauce
    3) i’m all about the ghirardelli mint caramel

hi marc. first i want to thank you for being open and honest about whether or not a hillbilly costume is racist (and you rock for checking out the flow chart and article) πŸ™‚

but in terms of being a hillbilly or redneck, i would still categorize that as racist and more so classiest because it’s stereotyping and implying that poor whites are ignorant and should be made fun of and are also inferior to more affluent white people. if other people agree or disagree please chime in (while being respectful).

i would also like to share with you that i attended a ‘white trash’ party in college and it wasn’t until someone informed me how this too can be racist (even though identify as white), that i understood. thanks for being honest and willing to learn more about it!

ps. staying home isn’t lamesauce…i hope you ate a bunch of candy and watched spooky shows! ohhh that is a good candy choice and i totally want to come to your neighborhood where they hand those suckers out!

hey chelsea. i can see what you mean about a hillbilly costume being classiest – it does make fun of a group of people for their stereotyped ignorance and poverty. when it’s put like that, it doesn’t sound too pretty. i’ll be more mindful of my costumes in the future.

for halloween i ended up watching survivor with my girlfriend. i love that show and spending time with her is always a good time. so i take back the lamesauce. and i’m too cheap to be handing out ghirardelli mint caramels. those i hoard all to myself.

i’m looking forward to reading a post about your awesome time in napa! isn’t it so beautiful there? it was a cool idea for ryan to take you there to celebrate halloween.
