Tell Me Something Good – A Huge Moment in History

By  |  21 Comments

i sit and write this with tears still in my eyes, a smile on my face and a heart filled with hope. i am overcome with gratitude that i get to bring my daughter into this world with the first woman presidential nominee of a major political party. i truly am. history is in the midst of being made and i get to be a part of it.

when my parents told me that i could be whatever i wanted when i grew up, that meant ‘president’ technically could be on the table. however, i never considered that. there was no evidence that this could actually happen. i never saw myself represented so therefore i did not believe it. but no more! this has changed and now when we tell our daughter she can be whatever she wants to be – there is now evidence to back us up. no, hillary rodham clinton is not perfect and there are some actions of hers i don’t agree with but she has made me darn proud to be a woman in america.

this election is not one to be taken for granted. i tend to leave most political stuff alone on here but it’s becoming clearer how important it is, especially this term. perhaps that’s another post for another time but it’s important to vote and to vote for the person (in this case – a woman) that believes in and continues to work for social justice for everyone.

the ‘tell me something good’ of today is that a strong, dedicated, and experienced woman is now the democratic nominee in the united states of america! that fact makes me feel pretty darn good. the world can change (and has) and it is up to each one of us to take intelligent action in continuing to make things happen!

I need to go back and watch her speech today, but I am so excited that we are moving to a place where women are becoming more empowered!

It really is a huge moment in history. Even us folks in Canada are rooting for the positive changes taking place 🙂 I’ve watched snippets of the Democratic Convention this past week…very inspirational.

My something good: Well, it’s Friday! And for me, that feels darned good as my work week tapers off, and I have family coming to visit.

    Cheers and happy weekend Chelsea!

Yesterday I just saw that video that Claire posted ^^ It’s pretty cool.

I’m conflicted by this year’s presidential race (although I will NEVER vote for Tr*mp) but in the end I agree 100% that I’m glad woman are finally being recognized out of the kitchen. (Although if you like being in the kitchen I think that’s wonderful- you have that choice!) It’s interesting how America can be so progressive and backward all at the same time.

it also makes me insanely happy that you refuse to type out his full name, audrey! it’s worse than voldemort. right you are that america can seem so progressive in many ways and other ways we have a lot farther to go.

It’s an awesome thing to see, even if she wasn’t my first choice originally! (Ya know, from this Canadian, who doesn’t actually have a vote!)

My dad sent my daughter this really COOL birthday present that she just got in the mail today. It’s been 100 years since women got the right to vote in Canada and he sent her 5 commemorative coins of women casting their votes. SO COOL.
Last night watching Hillary made me BAWL. I think she’s pretty fucking amazing. No, she’s not perfect but who is? Think of all the challenges you have faced as a woman in everyday life. Now think about the fact that she faces them x 1000 and that she has managed to get to the position she is in now. Everyone wants these pure politicians but you don’t get to the top without compromise. In fact, you don’t get anywhere without it. She has done the day to day work, the unglamorous work that gets shit done. You guys are lucky to have her.

This is what I posted on my FB last night after watching her speech (which I loved btw)
I was 5 years old in 1973, and I remember the Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs battle of the sexes tennis match. I remember knowing that it was VERY important that this lady beat this man. When I was 11 I remember telling my dad that I wanted to play for the Detroit Tigers but being told that girls couldn’t play Major League Baseball. I remember trying to apply for a job at a gas station at 17 but not even being given an application because the owner couldn’t conceive of a girl working at the station.
I remember ten thousand slights throughout my life and have forgotten a hundred thousand more that have happened because I’m a woman.
You see, the thing is, I’ve always KNOWN women could do anything because it was obvious to me. The frustration came in having to EXPLAIN the obvious, in having to do more to make less, in being constantly underestimated. The wasted time.
I wish I could go back to tell that 5 year old, that 11 year old, that 17 year old that not too long in her future, she would see a woman seek the highest seat of the most powerful nation on the planet. I am so grateful that I am alive to see this.
Even more so, I am grateful that my 10 year old daughter will see black people and women as President as THE NORM. As ALL SHE HAS EVER KNOWN. I think it’s part of why she wants to be Prime Minister of Canada one day.
Watching Hillary’s speech tonight was inspiring. She is indeed a workhorse folks, and you will be lucky to have her battling for you. Congratulations to my American brothers and sisters. And Congratulations to Hillary Rodham Clinton. A fighter who never quit. And by the way, ‪#‎ImWithHer‬

oh my goodness what an incredible gift from your dad to meg!!!!! i LOVE that! damn paula – you said it perfectly. i was really struggling with how to word it but “Now think about the fact that she faces them x 1000 and that she has managed to get to the position she is in now. Everyone wants these pure politicians but you don’t get to the top without compromise. In fact, you don’t get anywhere without it. She has done the day to day work, the unglamorous work that gets shit done.” thank you for writing that and sharing what you wrote on facebook!!!
