When My Husband Speaks….Fires Start

i am working on another post of my feelings while in Portland (and they were quite mixed and quite intense) but we had a wonderful time being back in Oregon for a very quick trip!

mostly because we started our first night out before heading to Eugene and a Lebanese restaurant where you could quite literally wrap your body in the size of the pitas. alison and i basically ate this whole thing ourselves. SO good to see you!

IMG_1443my husband had a great event in Eugene where we got to see so many wonderful people that we know and love and our favorite youth leaders even showed up to show their support and learn!

IMG_1460

right after the event was over, we were packing up our wonderful banner and all of a sudden all of the doors clunked shut and a strange sounding alarm started going on. at first we were like “hmmm this is probably just to let us know the building may be closing soon” and then smoke starting billowing down the halls so we rushed out, leaving all of our things behind except my purse and his laptop.

i snapped this picture (because that’s what bloggers do) right before this whole area was soon engulfed in smoke and then 5 fire engines rolled up. apparently the saw dust ventilation system got backed up, something in the system caused a spark and the ventilation system caught fire. it was crazy.
IMG_1519thankfully everything turned out to be fine and the only thing wrong with our stuff (and my hair) is that it smelled incredibly smoky.

it was a little intense though but luckily we found our new friend Jessi who is a student at the University of Oregon and she hooked us up with milkshakes while we waited! they were amazing.

IMG_1524now i am cranking this out as they are literally boarding our flight to HAWAII!!!! this will be the first time i’ve had two 6 hour flights within a few days of each other! wish me luck.

the new wifestyle: expect the unexpected!

questions:
1) have you ever been near where a real life fire broke out?
2) ever been to Honolulu before?? RECOMMENDATIONS PLEASE!!!
3) favorite type of milkshake?

    1) Behavioral Health unit of my hospital started on fire as I was leaving for the day. When the alarm goes off, you don’t go back in!
    2) Never been yet…one day though, to run the marathon!
    3) Any flavor, except coffee, is just fine…especially after a long run or finishing a marathon!

Is the Ravery tour going to Minneapolis? I live in Eau Claire, WI and Milwauke is just too far.

whoa…i bet that was so stressful! not sure if you have patients on that floor but that would be super chaotic to get everyone out! i went for a quick run this morning richard and i can attest to it…you will want to run for miles and miles with scenery like this here!

yes Ravery and i will be making a stop in minneapolis! we are waiting for a location but it will be in december (can you ask it not to snow horribly while we are there please). stay tuned for details 🙂

    1. When I was 18 I rented a room from this lady and her daughter who was also 18. She and I worked at the same club. it was a nice middle class home, nice lady but she had a crazy ex-husband that I didn’t know about. Apparently he had tried to kill her more than once in the past. Well, one night i came home and crazy ex was sitting with lady at the kitchen table. he was fairly sloshed but civil. We chatted a bit and I went to bed. I woke up at 3:00 a.m. to the smoke alarn and the lady screaming “fire! fire!” Crazy guy had set the house on fire as we slept. We got outside and then like an idiot I ran back in for my purse- no problems though. All of my things were ruined from smoke and water damage and as a renter I didn’t have any insurance. I ended up testifying against him in court but he got off. that’s my fire story!
    2. I WISH!!!! Jealous to the max.
    3. Chocolate. You had to ask???????

    1) Back in high school the fire alarms went off one morning. We had been told we would have a fire drill (though specific time not mentioned) so we all calmly filed out of the classrooms and into the parking lot. We got an inkling it may not have been a drill when the fire trucks showed up. I overheard one teacher telling another she didn’t see any fires but when she walked past the Home Ec rooms she could smell something burning. Years later I found out the cause was an accidental grease fire…and my friend and his Home Ec partner were the culprits!

    2) Never. (One day, perhaps!)

    3) I agree with Paula. Chocolate!

crazy that your fire drill turned out to be a real fire! i also find it funny that it wasn’t until years later you found out your friends were actually the ones that accidentally started it-busted! yes chocolate…maybe we need to get chocolate malts the next time we are all in vancouver!

    1. No, but I was a first responder (police officer and fire fighter) for enough years to know what it’s like – and then some.
    2. A fueling stop enroute to Saigon in 1967. The bar I was in at the airport wasn’t bad 🙂
    3. Guys like chocolate too!

During one of the first weddings I ever went to, a popcorn machine that was being used for the reception caught flame. It was really small and was put out quickly, but fire trucks showed up and a bunch of the wedding pictures ended up being with firemen!
