The Coolest Proposal Ever!

By  |  16 Comments

yee-haw! coming at all y’all from dallas, texas! we are here to pre-game christmas with my in-laws before we head off to kansas city, missouri!

i foreshadowed this in one of my posts about antarctica and now i can finally reveal the fun news! while we were in antarctica, our new dutch friends, stephanie and thijs GOT ENGAGED! i am pretty sure you can’t top a proposal in freakin’ antarctica – drop the mic and walk out because damn. i think this is probably the coolest proposal ever!

Proposal in Antarctica 1

the zodiac driver, charlie gets full credit for capturing the moment with snapping photos!

since neither of them are from america – they speak multiple languages (ha!). stephanie speaks dutch, english and german and thijs speaks dutch, english and spanish. thijs spoke spanish to the expedition leader and asked if there would be an opportunity to do something like this on the trip, which was confirmed.

more about the story: we were all getting ready to leave port lockroy to head back to the ship when suddenly thijs said they wanted to take a few more photos of penguins so they would catch the next zodiac back. little did we know….

thijs talked to the expedition leader who passed the message onto a zodiac driver, charlie who very casually said he would take both of them back to the ship. instead the zodiac driver found a secluded and sturdy chunk of ice. thijs asked stephanie if she would get out and explore a little more with him.

she said she was a little confused but went along with it. then he dropped to one knee, said something i can only assume to be super romantic in dutch and asked her to be his wife!

back on the boat, i walked back to the lounge area and saw stephanie still in her antarctic gear. she ran up to me and said “i have to tell you something,” to which i replied “ohhh what!?” then she very excitedly said “I’M ENGAGED!” and we jumped up and down and i freaked out and couldn’t stop hugging them!!!!! I LOVE PEOPLE IN LOVE!!! i’m still so excited, if you couldn’t tell!

proposal antarctica 2

funny story that earlier that day at lunch, stephanie and i were talking about how excited we were to visit the souviner shop in port lockroy and how we were going to get crazy all up in there. this conversation turned into how long ryan and i have been married and how we divvy up our finances.

stephanie started teasing thijs about how she really hopes to get married before she’s 30 (she’s 28) because she’s been his girlfriend for 9 years! we started teasing that maybe there would be a cheap ring he could get in the souvenir shop and then propose because antarctica. thijs sat there with the best poker face while we all sat around and joked about a proposal!

mere hours later, the magic happened and with a gorgeous ring because he was so well prepared!

here they are recounting their story on our ship later that afternoon!

huge congratulations stephanie and thijs! no pressure to invite us to the wedding but if you do, we will so be there! i couldn’t share this story until they returned home from their travels on december 18 to tell their families in person – what a great end to 2015 for these two love birds!

How exciting to be part of that! Also, how often can you call something the “coolest” and mean that both metaphorically and literally 🙂

What great news! Congrats to them. I wondered what kind of news you were foreshadowing in your previous post and concluded that maybe someone announced baby news on your Antarctica trip, but this is just as cool!

How many people can say they proposed/got proposed to in Antarctica? Not a heck of a whole lot I’m sure!

we did have two pregnant ladies on the boat – i was so impressed with them! i couldn’t imagine seasickness AND morning sickness but since most everyone booked this trip way earlier in the year, you make the most out of it! isn’t it so awesome about their proposal, not too many can say it happened in antarctica!!!
